We just returned from Chiapas to Lake Chapala through Oaxaca after driving down there last month via Veracruz State with detours to Cuetzalán and Hueyapan, Puebla and can report on our experience making the drive between Lake Chapala and San Cristóbal de Las Casas via Oaxaca versus via Veracruz State. While the drive through Oaxaca is still about 100 kilometers longer than the drive through Veracruz (without the lengthy detours we took this time), the drive through Oaxaca is a nice alternative to the drive through Veracruz and the timing will be close to the same once they have opened the Oaxaca... |
his may be the nicest small city in all of Mexico. Sitting astride the wide and beautiful Rio Grijalva just outside of Tuxtla Gutierrez at the point the Cañon de Sumidero begins and with a hot, dry climate, what a charming place. We just had lunch on the river bank and what a nice experience as the soft breezes embraced us off of the wide and pleasant river. Tonight we are staying in the Hotel Los Angeles just off of the main plaza and what a nice place with secure parking for $420XN a night.
More later.

The Carrera Panamericana was a border-to-border sports car racing event on open roads in Mexico similar to the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy. Running for five consecutive years from 1950 to 1954, it was widely held by contemporaries to be the most dangerous race of any type in the world. It has since been resurrected by Pedro Dávila and Eduardo de Leon as a classic road rally, this year from Huatulco to Zacatecas. The following photos are at their stop-over in Morelia 24/25 October 2011. Catch them early Tuesday morning as they restart and head out down Av. Madero.

THis ad appeared in the Tuxtla Gutierrez daily Cuarto Poder on March 11, 2011. Keep in mind that Cuarto Poder is a Spanish language daily newsapaper in a state where there are virtually no English speaking people. In fact, a lot more people speak Tzotzil as their primary languiage than English and the people who speak an indigenous language are among the primary reasons for the ad in the first place. This ad appeared in English only and I quote (My comments in parenthesis): COUNTRY DIRECTOR International Christian engineering ministry... |

We had long planned that this October we would take one of our periodic drives from Lake Chapala to Chiapas and this time we would skip the usual fast track over various autopistas through Puebla and Veracruz State inland and detour instead through Puebla mountain towns and the Gulf Coast of Veracruz from Papantla and Tecolutla south along Coastal Highway 180 through Barra de Nautla, La Antigua, Veracruz City and on to "The Tuxtlas", Catemaco and on to Coastal Tabasco before cutting over to Villahermosa, Palenque and into the Chiapas Highlands to our final destination of San Cristóbal... |

I especially liked the detour you made into Seattle. Did I ever mention I used to date Kurt Cobain's cousin Colleen throughout the 90's?

Looking About for the Perfect TownI, upon being correctly admonished for allowing this thread to wander about when my original intent was to simply discuss Cuernavaca as another in a string of places I have considered as a place to retire in Mexico, am modifying this thread to reflect the fact that it has evolved into a discussion of several alternative cities where the reader might achieve eternal happiness in retirement pending the big escape into the ether. It was suggested I, in my role as a moderator, test my skills at editing the thread by separating the discussion into light chats on various places but I felt perhaps... |
Now that we have beaten Guanajuato to death, I thought that I would pass on a hotel experience in San Miguel de Allende. Back in 2009, we stayed at the Best Western Monteverde Expess after finding a decent rate using our AAA membership. Will certainly not a five star hotel, it was adequate, the rooms were clean, secure parking... |
upcoming visitWe will be visiting Guanajuato for a few days in the near future, and would appreciate any recommendations for a hotel, and restaurants. Our 12 year old grand-daughter will be with us, so a pool might be a big bonus.
Anti-nausea pills might also be good. She wants to see the momias. ( insert puking emoticon here).

As most with a passing acquaintance with Chiapas know, the state is famous for marimbas and marimba music so Peter asked that while we spend our winter months in that state which is our habit, we see if we could locate a good source from which he could contemplate purchasing a custom made marimba and, fortuitously, yesterday we were in the charming colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo visiting the maestra de lacquer (for which that town is famed), Martha Vargas Molina, to discuss with her her upcoming possible participation in next November´s Maestros del Arte Fair in Chapala and, while there,... |
Has any one been to that city lately? I want to go for a few days during santa semana and wondered if anyone could recommend a good moderately priced place to stay near the centro. I prefer a private bathroom. Any dining tips also welcome.
thanks in advance | |
