Post2011 FERIA NACIONAL del COBRE - Santa Clara del Cobre

For anyone that might be interested in attending, this years confirmed dates are August 6th through the 17th. You may spot differing dates elsewhere (like I did) but this information is straight from one of the Directors at the Cobre Museo, who also happens to be one of the main organizers.

2011 FERIA NACIONAL del COBRE - Santa Clara del Cobre :: Comments

Neil, I know how much work you went to finding the correct dates. Now, you just have to hope that another charming Mexican tradition doesn't affect you--changing the dates and or schedules without informing anyone until the last minute. Laughing I must say, though, that seems to be less common than just keeping an event secret until just before it begins.

Thanks Jim!

You won't be able to count me as being surprised if four or five new sets of dates suddenly appear in the next two months! If it happens, so be it. Not much that I can do about it. Hopefully, we are covered no matter what happens.

Now I understand just how laid back and casual that Mexicans can often be but the situation in Santa Clara del Cobre is defying even my vivid imagination! The entire town is hurting from not only a lack of visitors but even their sales of copper products are way down to their out of Mexico customers. One would think that putting just a fair amount of effort into the promotion of the Feria Nacional del Cobre might produce positive results. With less than a month until the start on August 6th, the posters were finally done late last week. No mention of any of the events or their timing but they did provide to: http://www.michoacan.gob.mx/ but I challenge anyone to find anything on this site related to the Feria.

At any rate, I do hope to at least receive a photo of the poster and maybe some event details tomorrow.
LOL. Why am I not surprised, Neil? This is SOP for many eventos in Mexico. I don't really understand why there is not more comprehension about getting information out. Here in Morelia, many big events are often publicized mainly (or exclusively) through large posters in the main plazas.

The funny thing is that my contact in Santa Clara del Cobre, while originally from there, lived for many years in San Jose, CA. I cannot repeat the language he was using today to describe the frustration that he was feeling with the entire process! It was funny to hear a Mexican, albeit an Americanized Mexican, spouting off about the lack of thought and logic.

I expect anyone driving through Santa Clara that week will likely see some posters and perhaps a banner across the road by the main plaza. I'm sure they will put them up by the time of the event. Still a few weeks away, what's the rush?

Thanks for the reminder, Neil, your message may be the only advanced notice anyone will receive.

That happens anytime someone becomes Americanized, they start getting these ideas that logic should be applied and that things are supposed to make sense. He must not have been back here long.

I finally received a photo of this years poster:

I am hoping to get some follow up information with the events schedule.
Here we go on confusion about the Feria. Linda and I want to go to the opening of the fair. The following notice appears on the Michoacán state government site.

http://www.michoacan.gob.mx/ferias/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=208&Itemid=1

It says the Feria opens on August 7, not the 6th, with the annual parade. Neil, help!

Jim:

I see the guessing games continue! My logic would tell me that the poster is correct and the other site has their details messed up. I will try to find out from my contact but we may have a problem since he has the week off. If I had known this yesterday, I would have called him at work to get clarification. Will try and email him and see if I get a response.

I am getting to the point where nothing surprises me anymore. Just yesterday, I had a wild hair and decided to check Volaris on my reservations. In one of my documents, they had me flying out of GDL at 6:05am while another part of the document showed me flying out at 12:05pm. I checked available flights on that day and they were not even showing a 6:05am flight. Called this morning and sure enough, they had changed my flight! What made this very funny was that about a week ago, I talked to them about changing to a later flight and they wanted to charge me $50USD + IVA.

I will post as soon as I get clarification - if possible?

I just went back to the Government website and I may have solved the mystery.

That posting indicates XLV, which would have been last years event and I just checked elsewhere and last year the Feria did start on the 7th!

Just received confirmation of my suspicions: XLV as opposed to XLVI. By all accounts, the opening day parade should happen on opening day of August 6th. However, no one has seen a printed or published schedule of the daily events!
Seems rather presumptuous to assume the opening day events will be held on the first day.

What else can we do? I am holding out hope that sometime this week someone will get their hands on an actual schedule and then forward to me. After all, the 6th is Saturday - we don't want to rush into these things.

Part of the logic behind the assumption is that last year, a parade was held on the opening day which was the 7th.

A report on last years events by Crusty: http://mexicocooks.typepad.com/mexico_cooks/2010/09/santa-clara-del-cobre-.html
Sure makes me wish that I could be there for the opening days!
Probably a good assumption, just wouldn't stake my life on it, not here.

I forgot when you were coming. Hope you catch enough of the festivities to be worthwhile.

While I refuse to pressure myself, I am hoping to get there for whatever may be going on the afternoon of the 16th and definitely plan on spending the full day on the 17th. At the very least, I am hoping that they have some sort of closing day ceremonies on that last day. Without any schedule, that is about the best that I can do.

A Google translation from today's online edition of QUADRATIN:

"National Copper Fair Announced

Atsiri Macias / Quadratín

MORELIA., Mich., August 2, 2011 .- The 46th edition of the National Copper Fair and Hammered Copper contest, will begin operations from 6 to August 17 in Santa Clara del Cobre, the municipality of Salvador Escalante Magic Town who was appointed in 2010.

Santa Clara del Cobre, the balcony of the majestic craft show and will offer visitors a variety of products such as containers for the preparation of sweets and other foods, pans, dishes, pots, vases, jewelry and ornaments of various manufacture.

According to data provided by the Commission of Fairs, Exhibitions and Events of the state, currently estimated that 82 percent of the population depends on the work of copper, which annually goes to work to transform 450 tons of metal and generates an economic impact of approximately 50 million pesos.

The event will begin with the traditional parade involving forges floats with representative of the site, careers that are represented in the various activities of the population such as planting, harvesting, hauling corn, barn and weeding; will be undertaken the opening of the showroom demonstration of hammered copper.

Celis Oscar Silva, director of the Committee on Fairs, Exhibitions and Events Michoacán (Cofeeem), said: "This exhibition aims to facilitate the marketing of handicrafts, and passing on traditions to new generations. In Santa Clara del Cobre, there are over 400 shops that represent the livelihood of families living in this place. "

Meanwhile, the head of the Ministry of Culture, Jaime Hernandez Diaz said: "crafts as a whole are an expression of the cultural life of Michoacán, a rich cultural tradition that has to do with expressions that are from pre-Hispanic peoples. The use and exploitation of copper have to do with the cultural expression of Purhépechas. "

The craftsman Alfredo Velazquez, said that among the three levels of government distributed more than 350 thousand dollars in prize money between categories of children, youth, new talents and teachers.

A total of 880 pieces entered the competition which 30 percent are children, 20 percent youth, 30 percent of new values and 20 percent for teachers.
Oooh, good detective work, Neil!! And, of course, for the government of Michoacan to have the wrong information on their web site is adorable and so very Mexican. In fact, you may want to alert your contact to this because this may lead people to show up on Sunday instead of Saturday. I just checked and the same wrong information is still on the government of Michoacán's web site.

No daily schedule? Imagine my surprise. Wink

Isn't Mexico fun? lol!

Apparently the Government of Michoacan decided that four days prior to the start of events was the proper time to provide an announcement:
http://www.michoacan.gob.mx/COFEEEM/_XLVI_Feria_Nacional_del_Cobre

If my Google translation hasn't failed me, it seems that the awards for the various contest categories will be announced on the last day - August 17th.
Ah yes, four days is plenty of time! Wink

We are heading up to Santa Clara de Cobre on Saturday to see the kick-off events. We'll try calling some folks there to find out when it all starts. It does seem as though they will announce the awards on the last day--probably guaranteeing you a good show for your visit.

I just fired off an EMERGENCY HELP email to a contact in an attempt to get your needed info. Too late to get an answer back today but hopefully she will respond in the morning? Keep your eyes peeled to this topic and I will post as soon as I have the info.

A typical day in Santa Clara del Cobre starts with the shops opening about 10am or so. If it was me, I would open early during the days of the festival but HEY, what do I know as a dumb Gringo?
Thanks, Neil.... If you don't hear anything, please don't worry about it. This is such a typical Mexico experience. Living here involves getting used to this kind of uncertainty, and sometimes even learning to enjoy it--it is part of the adventure.

When we went to Paracho to see the guitar festival a couple of years ago, most of the shops were closed as most of the workers were helping with the festival events. We'll see what happens in Santa Clara....

Jim
Hi Neil, and anyone else who may be planning to attend:

The parade on Saturday, August 6 that kicks off the Feria allegedly starts at 11:00 am. However, my contact suggested arriving before 10:00 am for parking and to avoid road closures for the parade. Any bets whether it will actually start before noon?

You are doing better than I on gathering any info. Maybe my contacts have already started the party without us? With that split into the one-way roads, I am not sure where I would consider parking. One might get up into the centro area and then be trapped for a lengthy period and be at the mercy of the end of the ceremonies or festivities.
