PostBlack Pottery

When doing research for our previous trips to the area, I had read that Quiroga was known for "black pottery". However, we have never been successful in finding any while admittedly allocating too little time to really search for such. We hit the pottery shops/stands on the Zacapu side of Quiroga pretty hard and saw nothing along these lines.

Were we looking for something that doesn't exist or is there a particular area of Quiroga where one can find such?

Not sure what "black pottery" is or how it differes from other. I know some of the barro products from Capula are too fragile for your needs. Quiroga has one main area where most everything in town should be found.

I think you might find something useful, pottery-wise, in Zinepecuaro which is noted for that kind of thing - though I don't know black pottery from green or blue. If it is something you read somewhere you might chalk that up to the usual misleading or incorrect info about Mexico. Zinepecuaro is the only place I know around here that is known for pottery. Quiroga is the main marketplace for locally-made goods. Perhaps that led to the confusion about where it comes from.

Thanks Peter! If I am remembering correctly, the description that I read at the time was that it was supposed to be somewhat similar to the high fired shiny black pottery that Oxaca is known for. I will put your recommendation on our hit list for our next trip. Maybe for when we travel from Morelia to San Juan del Rio?

Zinepecuaro is not too far past Morelia's airport. With the new cuota you can make it there in well under a half-hour depending on which part of town you are leaving out of, so no need to schedule a special leg of a journey. I have a friend, Robt65, from MexConnect that visited us recently and lives in San Juan del Rio or close thereabouts. You may have a better route there going through Celaya out the other direction. Dolores Hidalgo is out that general direction as well, another of your products spots.

I expect we'll probably be seeing you here in Morelia on your next visit and could maybe help with suggestions for your travels - cuota tarifs vs other routes and sights on the way, that kind of stuff.

Actually Robt65 is the main reason we want to go through San Juan del Rio. He has a couple of product sources in various nearby locations that he thinks we should take a look see. Kathy's interests were tweaked when she found out that the region was known for Opals. Visiting there would depend on his having resolved all of his medical issues with the VA.

As far as Morelia goes, we have been very remiss in not spending any time in the city. A very poor excuse but just haven't allocated the time.

When I saw them a short time ago they came by way of what would look like on the map to be a nice shortcut. In retrospect he wished they had taken the cuota, just saying. A lot to be learned from others - internet is wonderful.

You might want to dedicate a couple days to Morelia. Seems I was telling you many months ago that you can get a brief look at the interesting architecture here and see the sights mostly in one day. True that, but it would take longer to digest it all. From your business perspective you need to cover a wide area of artisan villages. I see Morelia as a better place to live, convenience-wise, and the nearby towns as places to visit on day-trips - from the perspective of just living my life here.

Depending on how much time you have you may want to use Morelia as one of your bases as well. I can provide accomodations. You may wish to park here in my garage then stay a couple nights in one of my places in the Centro to explore. I live along the beltway so getting in and out of Morelia is easy from here. It might gain you some perspective. A lot of options to consider.

One good find at the Folk Art Market was an artist that specializes in Black Pottery:
Herilinda Morales Jeronimo
Taller de Convivencia Ieskaniï
Ireticatame No. 1 Barrio de San Pedro
Santa Fe de la Laguna, municipio de Quiroga
Michoacan, Mexico

Thanks, that shouldn't be too hard to find, Santa Fe is near the turn-off for Erongarícuaro. On the main road or inside the town?
